Kudzu Spirits

One of the first things I noticed after moving to the South was the kudzu draping the trees and changing them into strange, Max Ernst-like monsters. James Dickey wrote a poem about the kudzu--here's a tiny excerpt:

                    half out of leafage
As though they would shriek,
Like things smothered by their own
Green, mindless, unkillable ghosts.

I trailed over from Elizabeth Rose Stanton's Penspaper Studio and--lo!, another immigrant to SC, and one who grasps the marvel of kudzu.

I visited a friend in elementary school in Greensboro, NC, whose father led us on an outing to a small field behind WFMY-TV. Kudzu had overtaken the entire lot and turned it into a green castle with rooms and towers and low crawl-spaces. We fully expected to find trolls and faeries living there.

Hi Nance! Hi Steve! I have never heard of kudzu. It looks like it might just take over the world! Love the images, Steve :)

So glad you stopped by, Nance! I'm sure the trolls and faeries were there--they just hide from people.

Thanks, Elizabeth! :)

I can still remember a drive in Georgia...it was late evening, night was falling. We pulled over for gas, and I was afraid to get outta the car.

Kudzu was growing everywhere. It wasn't just that it made monster shapes of everything...I think I thought it was gonna eat me or something.

It often eats people.
